Reserva Conchal golf course is a Robert Trent Jones II design that has a mix of easy and tough holes. What makes this course special is the mix of rainforest and ocean scenery. My favorite hole is the 17th hole – a mammoth 210 yards par 3 whose elevated tee box offers an spectacular view of Conchal beach and the mountains in the back. That’s the only ‘nice’ thing about it – you need to hit a 200 yard windblown shot over water if you are playing the back tees.
The La Iguana golf course at Marriott Los Suenos is one of our favorite courses in Costa Rica. It has a nice mix of short and long holes, wide fairways and sneaky hard par 3s. The most attractive thing about the course is the location – the rainforest. You literally see monkeys, macaws and other exotic animals. You also get to hit approach shots with the rainforest as the background. The colors are so vivid that I find myself stopping several times a round to absorb the scenery.Like these pictures?
The Four Seasons golf course is a certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary. We recommend arranging your rounds to this course as far ahead as possible - not because there are too many players, but because they have limited amount of tee times per day. Our favorite hole is the 6th hole par 4 with a huge drop and awesome view of the Pacific ocean. Play this course to enjoy seeing howler monkeys and plentiful flora.
Hacienda Pinilla is Costa Rica’s little secret golf gem. It really doesn’t get the publicity that Four Seasons, Marriott Los Suenos or Reserva Conchal get but believe me, it is a great golf course. Located near the town of Tamarindo and inside the Hacienda Pinilla resort, this golf course offers wide fairways, long par 4s and probably Costa Rica’s most famous par 3 – the 15th. We like Hacienda Pinilla because you can play at your own pace. A round at Pinilla is very relaxing and you can truly enjoy the scenery – Guanacaste’s dry rainforest.
Cariari Country Club, every hole is a test, specially the second hole where it is common to have a 180-200 yard approach shot to an elevated green with out of bounds on the right and multiple trees blocking your shot. You will need to play a slight draw to get it close to the hole -- hit it straight on you will be looking for another ball to hit. Once you are done with this test, the short third hole is no push over. Drive it over a creek onto a tilted landing area and then hit a blind approach shot to a green that you don't want to miss.
Valle del Sol is located in the Santa Ana area of San Jose. Located conveniently close to hotels like the Marriott Costa Rica, Intercontinental, Residence Inn Costa Rica and Indigo, this course was first completely public course in the San Jose area. The way Valle del Sol is set up makes it a great option for a fun guys outing or for the low handicapper. Most holes have a difference of 60 yards between the white tees and black tees and in the case of the 18th hole, the white tees par 5 is 498 yards and black tees measures 600+ yards.
